Fashion

I have to wonder when it became fashionable to show your underwear when you are in public.
A number of years ago it became fashionable (?) for young men to wear their pants halfway down their butt and to show off their boxers. The crotch of their pants came midway between the knee and their crotch. In amazement, I watched them swagger down the street showing off their boxers. There was, however, a problem if they had to run.
Perhaps it was even before that. Sometimes with the low ride jeans, or jeans that had become low ride because of a (ahem) weight gain, when bending down, not only did your underwear show, but your butt crack showed.
On a recent shopping trip I went searching for some summer tops. I noticed an inordinate number of see through tops. Very shear, very cool looking for summer. However, I wondered, what does one wear under those blouses? So, I began to look around, and alas, it appears as though women wear....their bras. Colored bras, striped bras, even polka dot bras.
Sometimes however, the style seems to be to wear layers of tank tops, which seems to defeat the idea of dressing for comfort...at least for me. And if you don't want to wear layers, just wear one, with the bra straps showing.
And not only does one wear tank tops with bra straps showing....sometimes the whole back of the bra shows.
When did this trend start? When was it okay to have your underwear become outerwear? A friend blames it on Lady Gaga (whom I adore). But the whole saggy pants thing started before Gaga.
I know, I am getting older, and fashion statments sometimes elude me. I have to admit, some teens can actually get off with the layered tank tops, the cute bras under the see through tops. But then there are those....well, I wonder....do people look in the mirror before they leave their house?
OK, I admit it, sometimes I go out looking awful. I think we all do. I will clean my mirror tonight so that I can look in it and actually see how I look. And I won't go to the wine store with pizza all over my shirt and paint stained pants.

I had to laugh, Mia. I totally agree. I do not find it attractive. Didn't with the saggy pants and don't with the see through tops. The young can get away with it, but when you see women with the tight tank tops, well, there are few women over 15 that can get away with it.

I live in he city and I see these kids and it makes me laugh. I am too old. I know we had what we wore, and out parents freaked out. I got a pierced ear and wasn't allowed in the house. I guess we jus have to live through it and laugh. I don't understand all the ink these kids get. Their whole bodies covered in ink.

OK, can we talk about the holes in their ears? They have those things in their ears that make these holes in their lobes that you can see throgh.
I agree, Mia, the thing with their bras showing through their tops is not the most attractive thing. I think it is fun for the young kids, but 40 somthing women...noooo. Same with tank tops, and speaking of which, what is with pregnant women and tight tank tops...fine to be pregnant and proud, but not attractive.

It does seem to be a trend today, piercings and tats. Every generation has their fashion statements. Ours were certain brands of jeans and shoes. And I am told by my daughter that my jean jacket is now back in vogue. She was caught trying it on the other day and asking if she could have it.

Funny. Yes, I think it's hard to find fashion for anyone over 35, but then I think it always has been. There is a lag in clothes from 35-60 or so. The clothes are either too young or too old. As to the saggy pants, that seems to be for the young and the old who have that slightly larger middle portion!

Well, I don't wear saggy pants, and the belly is not big enough...yet...to worry about butt crack, but when I see some people wearing clothes that don't fit, it drives me crazy. And this includes too tight pants and tops. As for tats, I never got one. Have been tempted, but have not done so. Some of them are quite unique and interesting. We are all headed down to the Point for the regatta. Have a safe and happy fourth.

I guess in the warm weather, it's as close as you can get to a swim suit! The first time I saw it, I thought she had a swimsuit on. Then as I began to see it more, I realized what they were wearing. Don't get me started on the butt crack thing! And what is with the earrings that leave a big hole in your ear. Makes me a little sick to look at it.

I just discovered you are back...yeaaaaaa. OK, I confess, I am one of the ones who wears layers of tank tops. It is cooler for me to have my arms exposed, and one tank top just doesn't work for me. And I do have a tattoo. It's on my lower back, so I can hide it if I want to. It's so good to see you back, Mia.

Sorry Noelle, not big on tats but if you can't see it, what's the point. And if you can see it, don't want to see them when you're 80.

Yes, fashions change all the time and we have to go with the flow but saw a woman on the beach that should have never been in a bikini.

So Mia, start a new fad with pizza stains on your shirt and pants and maybe it will catch on. That's the crazy world we live in.

I also have a tattoo, Noelle. Mine is on my ankle. And I guess, Ginger, I'll worry about it when I hit 80! Yes, the women -- and men--at the beach sometimes should stay at home and swim in private! And cover ups work wonders or even a shirt. I, too, am glad to see you back, Mia. And yes, I go out for just one quick errand looking awful. It's usually the day I run into an old boyfriend.

There should be an arrest warrant for...I don't know...blinding the eyes. A woman in a long skirt, below her belly, a tank top above her belly, and no...she was not pregnant. EWWWW.

I think, Sassy, that you go to the mall to not just watch people! I have heard tales..I'm just sayin'. I heard they watch for you. ;) It is a lovely, hot summer weekend. Have a Happy 4th of July. Be safe and enjoy.

I laugh...dress codes change. Kids in my time were thought to be going to hell with their hair and their clothes. Appreciate their independence, isn't that what this holiday is about?
