Sports and Such

The Pens win, and what a game it was. Overtime. Onto Philly. Today is a perfect day here in the 'burgh. Sunny, warm. The landscape man called today, and the yard is scheduled. All the bricks around the beds are stacked neatly and the man is coming tomorrow to look at the tree stump that needs ground up.
I went to see Bean play lacrosse today. I don't understand the game, should look up the rules. I always yell for Bean, and I believe she gave me an annoying look today, but I can't be sure. In the midst of the game, running, bumping into one another, one could hear "sorry". I knew immediately it was Bean. She apologized...on the playing field! She later explained that it was because she bumped into one of her players.
Monkeyboy is trying out for a Sunday team for baseball. I don't know how Mippy and Bird are going to manage all this, but the kids really seem to enjoy it.
M.R.G. went with us to the game today. Bird and I got nachos, of course. MRG just watched us eat them. We were all hoping the MRG would go to school with Bean next year, but she has elected to go private. Private vs. Public. I won't even go there.
So, to Hockey God, who told me he was going to root for Philly....and to KK, who also wanted to see Philly win....neener, neener, neener. Here we go Pens, keep looking good.
I hope you weekend is a great as mine is starting to be. Need to go get ready for dinner...mmmmmm.
Have a wonderful spring weekend!

Gosh, those pictures are beautiful, mia. Worth waiting for all winter. The running with kids is draining, but it is worth it. And certainly better than them sitting around playing games on the stupid play station!

I think it's great that they are into sports. Kids need to move around more and get involved. Nachos are a good thing. You have several of the major food groups there. Keep eating!

I don't think sports are the end all for kids. I never played and I think kids can be well rounded and not excel at sports. It's nice if they enjoy them, but I don't think one has to be involved in sports to be successful in life.

I don't think anyone is saying that you can't be "well rounded" if you don't play sports. I do think it gives kids an activity that keeps them in shape, as well as a feeling of accomplishment and a sense of teamwork. My brother and sister-in-law go crazy trying to get kids everywhere they need to be, but I think they enjoy the kids activities as much as the kids do, if not more. Your pictures are great, as usual, Mia. And nachos at the park are always the best. I guess they don't serve beer at school functions. A pepsi will do as well.

We debated the whole private vs. public. Decided to use public since we were paying for it anyway. I think the key is to be involved in the kid's education. Our kids are into everything and we run like crazy, but I agree, it keeps them (and us) busy, but it is better than having them sit around doing nothing.

It's a great weekend here, also. Finally. The pictures are beautiful, mia. That tree was worth the wait. The whole country is sports obsessed with sports. I think it is fine as long as it is kept in perspective. I disagree entirely with making people heroes and pushing them through the educational system so they can "win" for the school.

We don't have lacrosse here. Lots of other sports, but not that one. Books are a nice alternative to sports.

Our grandson played little league for a while but gave it up which was kind of a disappointment. Liked to watch. He now does Akido which is a defensive sport, does bowling, fencing, takes golf lessons and loves to ski. Well, I guess there's no time for baseball anyway.
I am a big sports fan even though I don't understand hockey or for that matter, Lacrosse either, I still watch now that the Penquins are in the playoffs.
I'm glad your tree made it, Mia. It looks beautiful.

Curious, Mia, what kind of camera do you have? Those pictures are excellent. I can't imagine that you are getting that quality with a point and shoot.

Nothing better than Nachos and cheese, with hot peppers, of course, while watching a sporting event. Or anytime, come to think of it. It's the only reason I go to sporting events.

Thank goodness the weekend is over. Now I can go to work and get some rest. It's beautiful here right now, Mia. Hope it is as great when you come next month. Never played any sports. Actually, I was one of those kids who playes stick ball and kick ball on the street.

Pens lost, Philly won. Quite a fight they had there.

tigger, are you arranging for the Grand Central Station extravaganza? I have my dancing shoes packed. And Kitty, they are pink, what else would they be?

I played softball all though high school. I loved the competition and of course, the winning. But more importantly, I think, was the idea of working as a team. Recognizing that not everyone was a star, but everyone could contribute.

Lacrosse rules are difficult to learn because they are difficult to explain. Just watch and enjoy, Mia. And I hope Bean does. I got so much pleasure out of sports when I was younger...much younger. And I think they are great for kids, as is reading. I don't think books are an alternative, I think they are equally enjoyable and can be done together, just not at the same time!

It would seem as though I am in a minority here. I believe that we value sports too much and don't value intellect enough. We pay sports figures astronomical amounts of money, while we pay too little to those who provide a valuable service to our society.

I believe, Anonymous, that you miss the point. We are talking about kids playing sports, not about professional players. We are talking about kids blowing off steam, about kids being a part of a team. We are talking about parents trying to do the best they can about their kids and keeping them off the streets when they are not in school. No one would disagree that sports figures are put on a pedestal and paid too much money, but should we keep kids from doing something that makes them feel good and gives them an outlet for their boundless energy? No one is saying that Monkeyboy and Bean should forego their studies and become sports freaks. But, they should have the opportunity to do something they enjoy doing and that gives them an outlet for the inordinate amount of energy that they have at this age. In reading the comments, I hear parents saying that they provide the best they can for their children, and if their children are doing something they enjoy and that it is healthy for the children, then it gives pleasure to both the parent and the child. Besides, it seems to give Mia a good deal of pleasure, as it does a number of people who visit her blog. And if I am not making much sense, it is because I am exhausted because I have found a new house to renovate and have to work on it again tomorrow and the next day and the next day. So, it has been a good weekend for the most part, except for that game today. Tim, you shoes sound wonderful See you in Grand Central Station, and you should be easy to identify! We will look for the pink shoes. Your comments always bring a chuckle.

Working in a day care setting, I can tell you how grateful I am when the weather is nice and the kids can get out and run around. Beyond that, I agree with Ben. Kids participating in sports does not mean that they will ignore studies or become multi millionaire sports figures in adulthood. Those pictures are amazing, Mia. So beautiful.

But if they do, will Monkeyboy and Bean share the wealth?

The pictures are wonderful mia. All of our flowering trees here are about done with the flowers and all the leaves are out. I do love this time of the year, even with all the rain.

GO PENS

Wacky Mommy said...

Mia, you know your nephew, Mr. Hockey God, loves the Pens. He wore his Pens hat to work the next day and showed it off to his Philly co-worker (who was not that amused) and said nyah nyah nyah, ya little punk!

Or something like that.

We're watching the Capitals/Rangers game right now. I had to blog about hockey because I don't quite understand all this "edge" business.
