Snow

Bean took the picture of the snow on the tree. I still get excited when I see the first snowfall, not that a dusting counts as the first snowfall, but when I looked out the window in my office yesterday there were big, fluffy snowflakes falling. I really love the wet snow that clings to the trees and shrubs. And I like it before the salt trucks come around. I love to watch Bird make a sled track for the kids with bumps that make them laugh with glee. And Oscar the dog, running and barking along side them. As kids we used to spend hours playing in the snow, coming in only to use the bathroom (what a chore that was!) or to get dry mittens. We had at least three pairs, and it took an awfully long time for them to dry. I remember igloos and asthma attacks, snowball battles and snow angels, and of course, snowmen. I remember, Molly, the sheepdog and how I put boots on her so her paws wouldn't freeze. She ran down the hill at the cemetery and all I could see in the moonlight were the boots flying through the air. As a pre-teen, I remember throwing a snowball at a car and the driver chasing after me. My brother was asked by that driver if my brother had seen a boy running past. My brother said no. I don't know if he said that because he was asked about a boy and I was a girl, or if he just did it to protect me. I do know that he yelled at me later and I ended up telling my parents because I was afraid he would. I remember the big snowfall the snow in March, 1993 that paralyzed the city...24 inches of snow over a two day period. It was the day of the St. Patrick's Day parade, and they still had the parade. The city was virtually closed down immediately following the parade for several days. Now, that was a bad winter. I hope the first real snowfall is a pretty one.

Mia, I can top that! In 2006 we had 26 inches of snow in Central Park. It was on February 11 and 12, I think. It was a nor'easter and it was bitter cold and very windy. We also had nearly as much snow in 2003. How do I remember these dates, you ask? I was stuck at the airport in 2003 for two days. In 2006, it happened on my birthday! It was pretty when it first started, but it got preey bad by the end of the snowfall. As a kid, we used to ice skate in Rockefeller Center. That was always fun. Or we would go to Central Park and sled down the meadow hill. Great post, Mia.

I remember snow angels, and I remember my dog peeing on the face of the snow angel. I was so angry! AND, I remember my mom telling me not to eat yellow snow. We had great snowball battles. And we built wonderful snow forts. We lived across the street from a park and there was always something going on in the snow, sledding, skating, etc. Nice picture, Bean. I remember being very excited about the first snow. I think we had more when I was a kid, but then my memory is going, so I could be wrong.

We had a tiny bit of snow here today and the kids wanted to get their sleds out. I let them. They had fun trying. The were sweeping the snow into piles, trying to get enough to sled on. We are supposed to get more, I hope we do.

I hope we do too. The grandkids are coming in tomorrow and I would love to have snow for them.

I remember my son building a snow fort so big, we could all get in it and have a party, with snow benches and all.

Have to go now, Steelers coming on and would love to see a snow storm at Three Rivers.

If it could just snow and be warm. I like it when it is about 30 degrees, snowing and no wind. But then, I am just picky. I love to build snowmen and snowwomen (are there two w's?). Put a hat on the man and a pretty scarf on her head. Carrots and all.

Kitty, you done us good. I am still thawing out, got tickets tonight, what a game. I hope your tail thaws out, if you need help, let me know.

How did you get tickets, Ben? Good game. Snow looks pretty, kids love it. It's okay except when I have to shovel it. I remember ice skating and a big bon fire that we could use to get warm again. But we didn't use it too much, kept warm enough just skating. I still like to skate, though I don't do it much anymore.

I like being inside, cozy and snug as a bug in a rug in front of a blazing fireplace when the snow decides to fall heavily. Did not enjoy driving home this past Friday evening. The roads were sooo icy and dicy. Put the car in neutral and pretty much slid down a hill.

I did a lot of ice skating (and falling) probably until I was about 17. Experiemented with the sled riding, building of snowmen, etc. but never really got hooked. Don't care for this cold stuff much. How do Rogers and Hammerstein make it sound so romantic? Stay warm everybody!

OOPS! I meant to say Heinz Field, just another senior moment. Well, we won anyway, not always easy again but who cares.

Went to light up night with the kids from CA tonight. I think they enjoyed it but too many people inside. The fireworks are always great and the cookies too.
